Wind Turbine Blade Punctured by Lightning: Why Does It Happen?

A wind turbine blade outside Wichita, Kansas was recently punctured by lightning. The puncture hole does not appear to be significant on the outside of the blade but unseen structural damage could lie underneath. As seen in the photo below, the blade does not appear to have any lightning protection. In the heartland of the United States, lightning is very common. There’s evidence to suggest that wind turbines can actually cause lightning (that ultimately damages the blades of that turbine or other turbines in the same wind farm operation).

We discuss “up lightning,” streamers and various types of leaders in our Uptime podcast; tune in if you want to learn more. Even if the blade isn’t visually damaged, research continues to show that even very small strikes that don’t leave easily detected holes or burned areas can significantly impact the blade’s performance and longevity – and leave it more likely to be struck again.

The bottom line: Lightning protection for turbine blades is a necessity if you don’t want to end up with a wind turbine blade punctured by lightning.

If you are installing or repairing wind turbines, consider using WXGuard segmented lightning diverters to protect your blade from lightning damage.
