In 2020, I was fortunate to speak with a long list of experts and researchers in the wind energy industry – Bjorn Hedges, Plant Manager and ESIG User Group Chair, Michael Johansen of Anemo Analytics, SkySpecs CEO Danny Ellis to name just a few. What these wind energy experts all have in common (besides decades of experience) is a strong desire to share their knowledge to help improve the industry as it grows.
In some of my favorite episodes, these busy professionals have generously offered their time and insight on topics ranging from scientific and legal matters – DN GVL’s Alex Byrne and Matt Malkin talking about lightning damage, assessment, forecasting and Force Majeure, for example – to the industry’s history, current state and future (Paul Gipe, author of Wind Energy for the Rest of Us).
More recently, we’ve talked in-depth about how owner-operators can reduce potential losses from fire and lightning strikes, the two greatest risks to wind turbines. And they’ve been extremely candid, too; Hedges addressed the difficulties of protecting what is really a new generation of wind turbine technicians, and how important it is to not only share, but to really mine the ‘tribal knowledge’ that exists in the wind industry.
Through the Uptime podcast and a great deal of formal and informal networking, we at WeatherGuard aim to be a positive force in this industry. I hope you’ll join us. Listen to some of the episodes that might help you develop a broader understanding of the wind industry, and if you’d like to join us in an upcoming episode, please reach out. I firmly believe that the more we learn from each other, the stronger this industry – and the future of wind energy – will be.
