5 Does Static Electricity Damage Wind Turbines?

Uptime Podcast does static electricity damage wind turbines?

Static electricity can be a big problem for wind turbines. As the blades spin in adverse conditions like snow, static charge builds up quickly. Companies like Applied Philosophy have created systems to discharge this energy, and in this episode we touch on their SLPS for Gamesa blades.

EP5 Does Static Electricity Damage Wind Turbines?

00:00:08 – 00:05:08

Welcome back this is the Uptime Podcasts I’m your co-host Dan Blewett. I’m joined here remotely by lightning protection expert Allen Hall. Allen, How are you. Great Dan how are you doing? I’m good actually well. I had my My pride was damaged the other day but I made two separate trips to the grocery store to two separate grocery stores. I turned away both times. The North door turns your way the security. Do you know why? No mask. No mask. I didn’t have a mask on. Yep. Is that is that the law of the land down in Washington Dc right now? I was asking myself that same question because I was like was I supposed to know this. I mean obviously I like walk it was a ten minute walk for the first one and then a farther walked to the next one later in the day. But I don’t know how I know the official decree. It sounds like maybe it is. I don’t know wanna be no one more tuned into social media the new so. I’m surprised that you didn’t know that well I do follow Mayor Bowser here in DC. And they’ve been doing a really good job in instances are still pretty low here in DC. I appreciate that they’re doing. I couldn’t really mad like obviously I was irritated because I just like wasted a Twenty-five minute round trip beyond that. It’s like you can’t be mad at him like all right. I gotta go make a mask and then I made a mask and it was just terrible experiences. I went to the grocery store because I cut up a T. shirt. I duck taped the ends together of this fabric. And then throw it over my headband. And not stay up. I was like Oh this will work fine and did not work fine so I was just going to the grocery store struggling to keep this above my nose. The whole time and Just getting really frustrated by but I guess I see. We’ll have you seen the little online. I think I saw it on Youtube about how to make your own mask with the two rubber bands and the paper towel. Yeah I gotta get in a grocery store. I buy rubber bands chicken before the mask thing. Here we go to the store and buy couple mask and put it in the mail and get it over to you so you can go to the grocery store or you’re getting mail is mail person coming into the complex there or what. Yeah Yeah I actually got A. I got a new plant featured in the background of the of the video. A mail order plant mail order plant. It’s one of those. I’m sure you’ve seen a good. Indoor plants called snake plants wide leaves and apparently abused them and they keep on going. But I’m taking great care of the little guy but a filter my air out a little bit you know have a companion. That’s your corona virus filter. Yeah he’s my buddy thoughts awesome. Okay yeah so but no I mean all that stuff still going. I try not to go to the post office because there’s a really tight it’s like A. It’s like three phone booths combined is the size of my post office five blocks away and wow not great in there. They’re not usually the most efficient places. So an original post office from George Washington time. Or just what’s going on? We live in the middle of nowhere near or post office. One empty in too much larger than that. So it is murky size space is not small like it is a standalone building. It’s not that small. It strikes me as the size of like a standalone McDonald’s almost but the actual waiting rooms really tiny like super small so a lot of motors. Wait outside but then that’s why you need your mask exactly but I need the grocery store. It’s the proverbial catch twenty-two. Yes yes indeed you so this week. We’re talking a little bit about one of the Applied Philosophies Lightning Protection System so they have a pretty unique one. That’s kind of like a kit. Add onto a bunch of different wind turbine models. Does this system. Why did that? What does that need to exist? Mike my first question because it seems like good technology but what. What’s the problem that they’re solving? My question so what is a Michigan intellectual connection device. As the blades rotate around on the turban they can build up static electricity or they can just from Air Friction. Or if there’s an electrified thunderstorm cloud and you’re by the blades will get charged so there’s charging those blades and as these kind of sweep by the nacelle. They can occasionally discharge to the nacelle and give Mesa’s actually installed a device to bridge that gap what Applied Philosophy has done is made a better connection there. So they’re actually physically connecting to the blade into the nacelle to reduce sparking between the two In the FA the thought behind it is sparking causes electrical noise.

00:05:08 – 00:10:06

Electrical Noise Causes Transients in the wiring inside the Nacelle so sensitive electronics inside the NACELLE. It’s controlling the the whole generator. System and all the monitoring equipment can get upset from those sparks generated. Ed’s the blade spins around so The philosophy basically bridges that gap. Gotcha that makes sense. Yeah it does So static electricity. How big of hazard is that? I mean we talk about lightning. But how big has the hazardous? What are the main threats that oppose because much it’s going to be much lower voltage and amperage and all that stuff? So why is it so problematic? It’s like a capacitor In in a sense you got one of the world’s largest capacitors in a blade you got this you’ve got this metal down conductor inside of it and you have all this plastic on the outside and All lacking get charged and it would be enough to seriously hurt you. I think it on the right day in the right conditions. It would hurt a human. I I don’t know if you’ve ever seen Oh my gosh. What’s what’s the submarine. The Tom Clancy Submarine Movie Red October October. Right number Red October. Where they’re trying to lower Alec Baldwin’s character down onto the submarine. I don’t remember any of this but I’m GonNa love by had NC. Do Remember Sean Connery’s in it but that’s all I remember. Yeah okay so sean. Connery plays the Soviet Submarine Pilot Captain and then Alec Baldwin pays the renegade American right so okay The lowering Alec Baldwin down onto the submarine in the middle of the ocean is a helicopter and the helicopter. Ginny totta static electricity from the blades. Reordering rolling around in in the rain storm in as a lawyer. I’m down One of the crew on the submarine tries to reach up. And Grab Alec. Baldwin’s character gets shocked Gets knocked unconscious in that and that is actually a a real situation because the helicopter because a blazer moving so fast can generate a lot of static electricity and as a helicopter gets closer to the earth they usually drop aligned down a discharge it in the end the ground crew has a stick the US to discharge it If you don’t it’s going to go through the person and it really hurts There’s actually a study done several years ago. I had to go pull that back up now but there was a study about. How painful Those charges were I think of the Soviet. Study actually where they actually Put someone down there like okay. Tell us how much this hurts. Seems Nice Yeah Yeah well it gives you a real as oppose the first first hand. Knowledge of shark shock damage but That same thing exists on winter where you have is obviously not a wind turbine blades. Moving as fast as a helicopter blade moving a lot more air and as you get that charge built up on it. It’s going to discharge at some point. And if you happen to be working on the time you’re GONNA get really while up. And that’s why in the case of winter when they stopped and they want to discharge everything before they start playing around in the blades So the Applied Philosophy Concept is really good Which is essentially. Let’s eliminate some of that static electricity every time. The blade comes around to top Dead Center. It discharges the blade so it doesn’t really build up a lot of charging for an working really hurt you or create a big electrical spark which creates bunce noise which then turns on a lot of alarms because all sensitive electronic go haywire. So it’s a good concept. Yeah help me out here so I know if I am in my socks and I’m five years old and I’m running around. The my carpeted living room. Yeah I’M GONNA GENERATE SAG literacy. How do you generate staggers trophy when you’re just rollerblades in the air You got a piece of plastic blades. Plastic and you’re you’re running through the air and it’s a bunch of molecules into You tend to see more on it. I’ll give you the example existing. It also applies here which is We CALL IT PRECIPITATION STATIC. A lot of times on aircraft when aircraft gets charged aircraft. Don’t get charged all that much and clear and in winter and blades also won’t so there’s like truly to Kinda charging that happened here one is is. You’re running into ice frozen water so there’s friction there so as a blade hits. These little. Ice Particles helicopter blade airplane winter. Blade it knocks off electrons and then those electrons Basically transfer from these are particles. And how big are they? They’re Indika you tend to be small in clouds right so it’s not like hale in the sense like as we sit on it cloud so if there’s any clouds around the winters and allow these winters are up at elevation And the RN.

00:10:06 – 00:15:12

Clouds and precipitation is freezing or close to freezing. It can transfer charge from the water molecules over to the blade. It’s it’s actually frictional charging just like you rubbing your socks on half on the carpet. It’s a friction charging because you’re actually running into something. It’s hard rain doesn’t do that as much can build up a little bit of a charge because water is pliable when it’s liquid state it doesn’t really transfer electrons from one thing to another so when it’s frozen though that’s a different thing and it does transfer charge that’s why you see on aircraft I had the fortunate or unfortunate experience of flying. We call precipitation static flights which is essentially looking for places where you can charge aircraft up a lot And we did a bunch of testing this to Beech aircraft into when you flight the rain. The aircraft doesn’t really charged when you fly to ice. It gets charged quickly and to very high levels almost immediately so the same thing is this on winter months and I know Around us in western Massachusetts. There’s a winter. Months tend to be at the top of mountain peaks. There’s a lot of times like today where it was snowing out When the when it’s when the blade impacting snow told again. Charged up a lot Anytime you’re flying through snow crystals Obviously it’s it’s another form of ice crystals You’re going to build up charge on that. Blade. It’s going to be a lot of charge. Got To be really careful when you’re around those things and the second way you build up charge on a blade is just because of the thunderstorm around So there’s a strong electromagnetic strong electric field from the the charge in the cloud. And so the blade gets polarized in the bunch charge on it If if the cloud above it discharges then all that charge that had built up in the blades. GotTa go somewhere and it’s GONNA go back down to Earth Typically. So if you happen to be around that it’s GonNa snap in his in the if you look at the apply. Philosophy has a couple of pre decent youtube videos They explain that process like Hey When it’s cloudy outside there’s a lot of static electricity in the air. You’re getting upsets on your monitoring system and his caution you thousands of dollars a year to go out there and reset all those things because ablaze stops. Turn creating power. Yeah that’s that’s exactly right. That’s exactly right. Yep So for the other non electrical engineers out there including myself. Where does so you talk about things charging right and all of us as kids? Did that same thing like you. Walk around your socks on Saturday morning after eating. You’re you know you’re crazy. Sugars sugary cereal wired up with your brothers and sisters you go and touch the DOORKNOB and you see that spark jump from your fingers. But I I get the concept of charging. I know that I never felt electricity. My body with a turban or an airplane when you say it’s getting charged of where’s that we’re those electrons store like. Where’s the is it staying in the airplane skin as it in the wind? Turbine in the blade itself as it hovering on the outside. Like where when you say that conceptually where It’s the least energy state at the start there. So if you charge a let’s do the real simple experiment Where you take a balloon anion flight you rub it on your head and charges up your hair and it charges up a balloon. So charge isn’t really migrate on plastic parts for a while so whatever wherever the charge started kind of where. It’s going to stay so wherever you wrote. The balloon is where that charge. GonNa stay on metal objects It’s GonNa go to at least energy state which means if you charge up a metal airplane or or down conductor for that matter If you put a bunch of extra charge on it charges are going to try to get away from himself right so like charges do not attract right there. Repel one another so. You’re putting a bunch of late charges much of essentially negative charge on on on an airplane for example or down conductor so the charge is going to get that far away from the self as it possibly can to at least energy state which is on an airplane out towards parameters and on a winter is going to be somewhere around the on the tips of the down conductor at the bottom end of the top in trying to go to try to spread itself out. So there’s no concentration of charges to -sarily So that’s that’s where you’re trouble lies is on a on a blade. You got two problems when you get down. Conductor probably charge because it doesn’t have ground path except Through this Plight philosophy device And then the second one is the. The surface of the blade itself can get charged in depth. Charge doesn’t move very well so the very similar give you another airplane example. Which was the beach starship which was carbon-fiber her playing one of the first Real commercially available carbon-fiber airplane and one of the one of the Things that they notes off that airplane was when you flew it through.

00:15:12 – 00:20:01

Icing CONDITIONS STATIC electricity types of conditions. When they brought it back down to Earth at that thing hold a charge and you could walk up two and a half hour later and touch it and get walloped Because the charges that migrate very well airplanes kind of carbon fibre. Plastic thing so. There’s a lot of plastic in charge longtime migrate. Same thing happens on winter. Blake’s it’s mostly Balsa Wood and fiberglass and plastics Charges It migrate very well. But if you happen to touch the wrong spot of IT WHAMMO YOU’RE GONNA get lit up similar to touching A windscreen on an airplane which like Boeing airplanes. There’s no anti-static coatings commodores straight glass essentially And if you go on Youtube and look at. Saint almost fire on a airplane window. You’ll see these big big discharges happen. That’s electric charge going trying to even itself out on the airplane over that windscreen. Which is not conductive if you if you touch that window after you’ve been through a flat like that it will shock you in it will hurt And the same thing looks on winter blades and probably parts of the NACELLE. Quite honestly I know the Times I’ve been up on an excel But this has done a time to remember earned west Texas when we went onto a couple of cells in West Texas. And I’m looking at some blades One of the things we did was really try to reach over and discharged up before we got up in there. Just because it would hold charge it would hurt and It’s no fun even you know even if you’re walking walking along the carpet and you rub your your socks on the carpet. You’re touching DOORKNOB. That hurts but more times about a thousand. That’s the kind of shocks you’re GONNA get dangerous so the effects of style up stack electors. Eastside from gaping. Does that in does that. Expedient the is that a word expedient I think it is Zack expedite. Is that speed of the the process because we talked about the blades. Dial electric becoming more porous. Overtime does get a static electricity. Hasten that process. Yeah sure jerk if you bought them enough Stephanie. Like Trinity on anything Air Plastic aircraft parts get. See it all the time and become porous overtime because you end up putting so much charge on them. It’s GonNa find a home eventually. It’ll it’ll pinprick The plastic that I think the same thing is this on winter. I don’t think it’s is because winters are so much bigger. It’s hard to pick out little tiny details like that but you see it all the time when airplane parts all the time The particular knows rate of juicy. It all the time. You see these little Steady black dark Black spots and wing Yup. Yup you see them all the time all the T- basically any corner of an airplane. Wingtip ailerons elevators. Vertical stabs. Yeah you’re going to see these. These burn marks. That happened from that. Yeah and it’s it’s not trivial I think a lot of sync static charges a trivial thing. It is totally not a trivial thing. It’s a big nuisance item for wind turbines. Obviously if you start Tripping off a lot of alarms on the wind turbine and the turbine shuts down. Because it’s not sure what it’s doing you’re losing money that’s crazy. There’s no reason to be losing money there On an airplane it just causes havoc to the mostly the radio system. So you makes it hard to communicate or navigate. Both of those are bad. And that’s why we spent so much time On the aircraft site on the aerospace I was much time. And there’s actually regulation to say you got to go look at this and make sure the aircraft safe to fly on the winter inside not so much and I think that’s just experiencing as we continue to push the envelope and we continue to push more and more wind turbines out into places like the North Sea or off the coast of Japan in worse weather. Conditions like snowy conditions. Like we’re we’re we’re used a lot in the west coast Japan for strike tape the static electricity there is going to be tremendous because the blades are always turning in snow and I think the same thing who says in the North Sea with a lot of times of turning a snow on the hills on the mountains of Italy where they’re always turning snow. There’s a lot of static there and so they the sap device that apply philosophies. Come up what makes complete sense in that. You’re constantly discharging. Your you know you are because you’re making physical contact between the blade and the cell you providing electrical pamphlet charge to travel wherever it’s GONNA travel every every rotation so there’s just very little chance of charge on the blade and the little sparks that develop that happened between the blade The the plight philosophy device and sell we much much smaller versus the several inches Arguing THAT WORKER.

00:20:01 – 00:25:02

Otherwise so let’s go. Noise is related to the link to the spark for the most part because the voltage is are higher so the higher the voltage the higher. The noise is just like a lightning strike in the middle of the summertime. You hear on your radio. Same sort of thing. Big Big long arc creates a lot of noise or travel across the world. Saint thing exists here. Where in this case the sparkly close to the sensitive electronics in feet? So that’s why they apply philosophy device. Make sense and you. You did look at those. You had a chance to look at those videos. Allow the high current test right. Yeah Yeah so they did testing down at From what I could see when the one video they could be down to uh lighting technologies or antique down Pittsfield and had done two hundred thousand high current tests across device. That was pretty impressive Can we put that as part of the show notes? Dan is video. Yeah I think that would be good because you can actually see how that lightning test was conducted. The they they have. They have done their homework. you gotta give credit They have done their homework. And it sounds like they’re selling some of these things because nuisance failures win turbans or costly. So let’s talk about One of the other small often misunderstood and overlooked pieces of Lego protection. Which is what weather. Guard cells so How does a segment lighting divert or like strike tape? How does that help? Discharge some of that static electricity boy. In our case strike tissues around the receptors. And it’s there to guide. The lightning static electricity to and from the receptor Because in many cases and it’s very easy to see go online just google. Lightning receptor winter and blade You’ll see a bunch of lightning damage. Static electricity damage up around the receptors. Because you’re not moving charge to where it should go. Which is where the receptor is and so. Our strike take device actually provides the pathway to and from the receptor so on the lightning. Strike Situation A lot of times receptors are actually reaching out electrically into the space where providing that pathway to get off the blade resort follows the straight out in the atmosphere. And then if the discharge the discharge happens but we know we’ve already created that. Pathway Saint they for static electricity What you don’t want to do on a blade is let random static. Electricity discharges just happened anyplace you want to control. That happens right so and a strike tape case near the receptor is going to take that. Blake does get charged as trying to discharge up in the atmosphere in it. We’ll do that at least you’re giving it a path to go and it’s not through the blade it’s on. The outside of the blade. Work can do no structural damage. That’s the beauty of something like a strike date because you can just apply to. That’s out of the winter blade and get that kind of increase in performance and protection against punctures around and and and electoral stress around. The receptor extends the life the blade considerably. Just for that reason. Gotcha Gotcha so let’s talk a little bit about the error codes that you alluded to so what are some of these era codes and so they get tripped by not just lightning strikes but just any amount of current flowing through the tower through the Nacelle through the blades. I mean what those Eric Codes. So thank you think of it. This way A lot of the inch mutation on a turbine blade. The monitoring systems are there and they’re working at roughly five volts maybe ten volts twenty volts. Right so they’re actually They’re sensing things issues. One simple example. So let’s use the animator which is a wind speed sensor thing operates at a relatively low voltage and a lot of times. The wires aren’t shielded. They’re so you’re you’re trying to measure wind speed. It’s sitting there spin it around. And it’s measuring data and that tells you how your position the blaze to get the most efficient use of the wind turbine to generate power right so using the wind speeds. And you can actually pit the blades for more efficiency. So what happens is that spark happens between the Blade and the cell is Arc’s across Is is getting into the wiring Like the Anti Monitor wearing and so the computer sitting on the backside is working at a couple of bolts seizes one hundred or two hundred volts spike happen and doesn’t know what to do with it it just barf sat it and it says Whoa. Something’s really wrong. I’ve over limited. That’s not possible. In those cases I base I. I have a bad Adam ometer so I’m going to stop measuring wind speed and when I stopped measuring wind speed I probably stopped determine. ’cause I don’t know what I’m doing. It’s just like also not knowing whether wind direction is so you know some worst case situations the wind turbines pointing in the wrong direction or or take it back even on. Anna Monitor where you if. The wind speeds are too high. You’re not syncing it. You don’t WanNa be running the winter. You WanNa stop it right so not having working at a monitor a lot times.

00:25:02 – 00:30:02

We’ll just shut down the turbans and that’s that’s where that electrical noise plays into it because it’s working at a couple of volts and then it sees as big voltage spike or repeated big voltage by his every time. That blade comes around with a three blades. Come around get sparks. Park spark sparks park it. Just wipes out the sense. It just overwhelms the signal which is trying to measure so it would be Sorta like if you’re trying to conversation and rock concert sort of like daddy be standing right next to somebody having the conversation at a human level. But you’re just so much noise in the background. You can’t hear another. That’s what it’s like in electronics touch. And then our repairman dispatch for all the I do. They have to have someone physically. Go out to reset them. You have to reset a Lotta Times. Yeah Yeah because They’re hard heart. Failures takes someone physically. Look at because what you don’t want to do is start it back up and have some if it did shut down because there was a real significant problem you just don’t WanNa like flip it back on and not go look at it right destroy. Its offers right because right. Because it’s it’s it’s the proverbial the circuit breaker blue. Let me reset the circuit breaker. Open blue again me reset it again and then there’s a fire. Yeah that’s right. You went to figure out why before you turn it back on because you have to take every fault as a real condition. Now it’s sort of like Crying Wolf right if you have a constant and I think this is one of the solutions that apply. Philosophy is trying to to to address which is As their guys repair people go back out to these winters constantly. Resetting the same error code all the time they stop looking. If there’s a real problem yeah so nature right. Yeah Yeah you’RE GONNA YOU’RE GONNA get to the point where you’re gonNA Just start flipping system on paying attention to what’s going on and that’s when dangerous things can happen right so you’re by eliminating those false codes from happening. You actually make it a much safer environment for everybody. Yeah no that makes sense. Yeah I can imagine I know me working on cars as a as a high schooler and a little bit into college like you start to learn that are I just. I don’t want to just address the Symptom GonNa make sure. I know what the problem was. So right you know if you have a little whether it’s electrical or some other little thing it’s like parts of wearing out before it should okay. Well why is this happening? There’s got to be. Is it houses else going on rather than just you know. Throw in a new. Certainly you said a new flip in the circuit or throwing a new fusion there yelling new brake pads even though they’re wearing out super fast or whatever it might be or the putting the penny and the fuse box to taking the fuse out altogether right. How many times have you seen that on a car? I’ve seen more than enough times. Yeah those systems are there to Britain for getting killed. And then you’re short-circuit those systems and then bad stuff happens. Don’t do that right. And why why do we call that? Gremlins is that a is that a United States thing will recall the Gremlin. Maybe I don’t know it may be. I kinda wanted to call in and other countries but Yeah here we always say. Oh It’s another Gremlin. Gremlin is a was in a car at one point which has disappeared choice named car. Obviously it was an ugly car. Maybe a fair choice. So it’s appropriate adequately described its attractiveness. Yeah Walk into the dealership. I like one of those gremlins please. It was no Swan. No justice animal. No Eagle No no haggar lie. It wasn’t a mistake. This is call it that was not a Mustang for sure for sure so yes so their company. That’s that’s but they’re not. They’RE NOT MANUFACTURING S. O. P. S. system for like that many models. It’s only it seems like a select handful of Siemens urban. So maybe that’s just it’s not an issue with other other wind turbine models. I think that it is they have very similar setups but the on the gamay Somalia various specific Arrangement in which Plight philosophy can just retrofit onto so. You don’t have to do a lot of MODs to and you don’t want to do in terms of you wanna be able to take what’s there improve it. And and which is what they’ve done. They’ve taken the existing architecture mechanical interface and just grafted onto it with something that works electrically better. Yeah so it’s a. It’s a smart device. Molin school there’s a lot of pretty interesting technology. We talked a little bit about drones and and some of the video stuff. And there’s there’s a handful of other companies that are doing this up as well so it’s interesting seeing some of these just startups and and other ventures that are trying to make us because it just makes sense that the mean is you’re so far out in remote corners of the world. I don’t WanNa be sending humans out there all the time all right getting you’re getting your plane and then getting a weird like I imagine like a shining where they have the snow cat.

00:30:02 – 00:32:17

That has no yeah. Yeah Yeah it’s like you’re taking that out to get to some of these things another have roads built in there but the shining but not red October have you. Have you seen the Shiny Red October part as a fair question? Okay and you have downtime right now so you can actually sit there and watch red October. Which is a very good movie by the way I have no downtime. I have no downtime. People think I have downtime but I have many many many projects and I don’t know as much as I do appreciate classic movies. I don’t know that one just like that’s a classic just didn’t appeal. I remember my brother is into it. But because it’s based in Washington. Dc A whole a whole section of that movie is based in Washington DC. Just down the road from you. Matter of fact this is true. This is probably see some things you recognize your window. You probably you probably allow these places well. People have been hounding me to watch tiger king not so much the hunt over which. I’m going to stay agnostic on Tiger King. I don’t have I don’t even know I know what it is. I don’t have no idea what it’s about is Appling weird that now. It’s a it’s a strange strange show but But Yeah so Alan could show today appreciate it thanks. Lisa there’s a lot of new new technology and I think we’re GONNA continue to cover some of these interesting innovations and some of the companies. That are behind him.
